I’m really just learning my DSLR, the Nikon D780. I bought it because exposing film and having it processed is getting expensive. I love my F3 and all my manual focus Nikkor lenses. I wanted nothing more than to be able to shoot, upload to my iPhone and write articles on my iPad. I want to be able to use my manual focus lens too. So I researched the best DSLR for manual focus Nikkor lenses and came up with the D780. I took my time, bought one with a low shutter count and bought a VR 24-80mm f3.5-4.5 ED G. I used it on a trip to Glen Canyon and I did what I described above.

I like that lens but I had read about the 50mm performance. On a trip to Tempe Camera I saw one used in the case and purchased it. Inexpensive and simple, I took it home and mounted it and took Lucy, my sheepadoodle for a walk around the block taking a few snaps on the way. Later in the evening I used it to photograph my son playing at Pho Cao in Scottsdale.

I want a prime, a basic lens too that will promote my ability to frame and construct my images. I’m teaching myself photography and I have no one to answer to except myself.

So, I really like the 50mm and the D780. It is what I’ll use to force creativity by keeping things basic and simple. I’ll mount my manual focus AIS lens when I need different focal lengths.
