We lived in the “De Turn Off Estate” or at least that’s what was painted on the mailbox. For four years we lived in the “island of Arcadia” which borders 44st on the West, 56st on the East, Camelback on the North and Indian School on the South. It was a huge sprawling home. The main hallway was 18 steps from the bathroom to the kitchen. There was a big living room, a dining room a big family room and a bar.
The bar was my favorite. It was a wet bar complete with a sink, refrigerator, a lighted shelf for liquor bottles, red padded vinyl bolster, a TV up in the corner complete with a beehive fireplace with a swing out cooking pot lever. I really enjoyed winter evenings with a fire drinking tequila and margaritas watching sports on television.
My wife had a surprise 50th birthday party for me here. Another cool thing was it snowed one winter. My son actually made snow angels in the yard.
Our whole family lovingly remembers our time here. We finally moved south a little more than a mile, behind Arcadia high school, still in Arcadia, still in a good place. They re modeled the home wiping out all the beautiful crafted rock work. But we still have the pictures, the memories of De Turn Off Estate.
