The F3 is so cool yet that’s a little odd.
And that’s what caused me to look at setting it up for flash photography. I wanted to overcome my aversion to not being able to use it at night or in the dark for my photography.
I researched a proper Nikon flash made for the F3 and found a good copy of the SB-16. It is an era correct flash configured for the rail attachment and TTL (through the lens) flash photography. It is huge! The flash unit is not simple with all its options, dials, switches, plugs, mainly the nomenclature on the flash housing. When reading those numbers, they matched with the focal lengths on this particular zoom, the Nikkor 28-85mm f3.5-4.5 AIS.
I thought if I was going to make good photographs at night, this lens goes with this flash gun, these two things, the flash gun and the zoom will help keep things as simple as possible as I learn. They seem to go together so well so I bought this Zoom to help me learn night photography in a methodical fashion.
To date, I have used the combination of the three for just a few photographs. It works but in comparison with my DSLR, there is no comparison. It’s so much more time, must have knowledge and skill to not waste film.
In the meantime, I’ve used the 28-85 on my F3 and my D780 and can say that it’s a nice lens that I will reach for again, but probably only for flash photography ((LOL)))
