There it was, in the back of the glass case, fronted by a few G lens. It was in the wrong spot but I wasn’t.
Mam, may I see the manual focus lens in the back?
She reached for an older AFS lens and I said no, the old one, the really old one as I giggled a little. This must be the place as I saw the widest aperture numbers were white signifying this was and AI lens (along with the step seat mount.) My only other non-AIS lens, the excellent copy of a Nikkor 28mm f2.8 was purchased right out of this glass case for $25! This lens is near mint (no scratch - no fungus - no haze hahaha) for nearly the same.
I’ll take it.
I didn’t know much about it but I knew I had something. Turns out I do. This purchase was another run to Foto Forum at lunch. When I got back, I looked up this lens and read up about it. I’ll place a few of the links below but in a nutshell, this is a classic Nikkor lens, many used it for portrait. It’s described as a particularly a nice lens for that. That’s good, I’ll be using it more in the near future.
