What a fantastic quiver killing lens! An excellent lens for a variety of photography. It replaces a whole bag of lenses with just one. But it is a heavy lens that adds a lot of weight to your camera. There is a lot of glass in the compact 28-300 at its nested, 28mm position. I don’t use a strap with my DSLR, I use a padded carry bag so weight and or protection isn’t a problem.
I use this lens on my D780 and I also use Manual Focus Nikkor lenses as well. What I do is keep the 28-300mm mounted all the time and bring a specific MF lens if I want a certain look and feel. I also have an AF-S 24-85 G ED VR if I want to focus wider and no need for telephoto such as indoor photography. The AF-S 50mm G that I own has certainly become far less used however I do use it for specific situations such as street photography.
The point here is that the 28-300mm is the replacement for a bag of lenses. It does the work of many and with far less hassle.
