There is something about spirals and this one is iconic. It was an amazing experience seeing it and I’m sure to visit again but not alone, I’ll be taking someone who wants to see it. The area that it’s in I’ve always wanted to visit and I’m glad that I did. It is a ninety minute drive from my house and it’s a quick drive, most of it on the I-10 south.
The Saguaro forest that Signal hill is in is also iconic. On the way in I had a red tail hawk lift of and it had a snake it it’s talons and landed in the crown of a saguaro. I really wanted to stop and pull out the 400mm lens and get a tight shot but I was on a mission.
It’s a short hike from parking to the boulder pile. The big spiral is easily accessible. There are many smaller spiral and even a sun petroglyph. I really suggest this one for couples as the hike is easy and there is so much more to do than just look for petroglyphs.
I used my Nikon D780 and the classic AF-S Nikkor 17-35 f2.8 D with a circular polarizer filter to adjust the light and turn down the reflective glare. I was on a mission and this was my first stop of the day. This was the farthest out and on the way back home, I had a plan to photograph the Picacho petroglyphs south of Casa Grande. The day started out splendid and I knew it was going to be magical. I got the shot and it was well before 9a. Time to get on the road, I want to be home by high noon.
