Revel Surf is a surfing wave pool located in Mesa Arizona. Big Surf was the world’s first surfing wave pool located in Tempe, Arizona. In the mid seventies, I learned to surf at Big Surf, then on to California and Mexico before I landed in Hawaii and surfed all over the O’ahu. It was time to take my camera out to Revel Surf and detail the imagined wave. I looked up the schedule for the best surf session and presented myself at the counter. A manager discussed what I wanted to do and our conversation lead me to the best place for viewing. I walked over to the cabanas, pulled an umbrella over to a good spot and started photographing the generated waves.
Revel Surf is modern science applied to a freshwater surfing wave pool. The location is in the Sonoran Desert, hundreds of miles from any sea or ocean and nearly sixty years since the creation of the first wave pool. The wave here is shapeable and can be tailored for shape and ability. It is modern, current and promotes surfing in ways that have yet to be developed or imagined.
This page about Revel Surf reveals my interest in photographing the inland surfing experience. On this day, my focus was only on the wave itself. There is much more to the surf park, there is a stationary wave too. I will present that on my next visit.
Thanks go to the manager who allowed me the freedom to explore the grounds with my camera.
