This was a find. I knew that South Mountain had petroglyphs around its base and all over the mountain however this group was a find on my own. I simply drove to a likely looking spot annd parked my Forester at a place that I could access the mountain. I started to hike a single track taking the pictures below of spots that when I would get home, I would expand and search on my tablet. It was a pretty hot day, the high will be about 105 degrees, very little cloud cover. The desert varnish rock reflecting UV rays, baking me even though I’m wearing a hat, a head cover, long sleeves, sun gloves.
I came upon a ridge that had a lot of black (blank) desert varnish rocks, following the trail topping out on the ridge I could see across the wash to the other side. There was a small pool area (dry as a bone) that would draw animals after a rain. I raised the zoom lens, twisted to 400mm, that’s when I saw the first one, a design. Where there is one, there are more and yes there were. Spiral, snakes, designs and stick figures along with concentric circles. I had found petroglyphs.
